CSCMP roundtables head into spring with a host of new events

With more than 80 local chapters or roundtables, the supply chain organization has events occurring nearly every week.

The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) has long maintained that its local chapters, known as roundtables, are the heart of the association. The roundtables provide a vital, local source for informative meetings, educational seminars, and rewarding networking. With more than 80 roundtables around the world, there is sure to be a CSCMP event happening somewhere in the world almost every week.

To find out what is happening near you, check out the listing of roundtable events on the newly redesigned CSCMP website. Here is a sample of some upcoming events:

  • The Kansas City Heartland Roundtable will host a networking reception and brewery tour at the new Boulevard Beer Hall and Visitors Center in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 29.
  • The Columbus, Ohio, Roundtable's First Annual Career Development Panel will be held on March 30 in Hilliard, Ohio.
  • The Twin Cities Roundtable will be offering a half-day seminar on April 21 in Bloomington, Minnesota, that will feature presentations on managing the demand chain, procuring trucking capacity, leadership and teambuilding, and supply chain mapping.
  • Greg Sikes, vice president of products at DAT Solutions, and Ben Cubitt, senior vice president of engineering and strategic career management at Transplace, will discuss the North American trucking market at a Dallas/Fort Worth Roundtable meeting in Plano, Texas, on May 18.

CSCMP's international roundtables also hold numerous events throughout the year. For example, CSCMP's Mexico affiliate, Conalog, holds monthly breakfast meetings with multiple speakers. Previous sessions have covered topics like the economic outlook for the trucking industry, strategies for controlling costs associated with serving clients, and preventing in-store stockouts, to name just a few. Another example is the Spain Roundtable's popular European Conference/Supply Chain Leadership Forum.

North American manufacturers embrace “factory of the future”

NMFTA to release proposed freight classification changes this week

The NMFTA will publish proposed changes to its National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system Thursday, a transition announced last year, and that the organization has termed its “classification reimagination” process.

Businesses throughout the LTL industry will be affected by the changes, as the NMFC is a tool for setting prices that is used daily by transportation providers, trucking fleets, third party logistics service providers (3PLs), and freight brokers.

IFR: five trends will drive robot growth through 2025

As the global market value of industrial robot installations passes its all-time high of $16.5 billion, five trends will continue to drive its growth through 2025, according to a forecast from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).

That is important because the increased use of robots has the potential to significantly reduce the impact of labor shortages in manufacturing, IFR said. That will happen when robots automate dirty, dull, dangerous or delicate tasks – such as visual quality inspection, hazardous painting, or heavy lifting—thus freeing up human workers to focus on more interesting and higher-value tasks.

Disruption events to global supply chains rose 38% over 2023

Overall disruptions to global supply chains in 2024 increased 38% from the previous year, thanks largely to the top five drivers of supply chain disruptions for the year: factory fires, labor disruption, business sale, leadership transition, and mergers & acquisitions, according to a study from Resilinc.

Factory fires maintained their position as the number one disruption for the sixth consecutive year, with 2,299 disruption alerts issued. Fortunately, this number is down 20% from the previous year and has declined 36% from the record high in 2022, according to California-based Resilinc, a provider of supply chain resiliency solutions.
