Target executive to discuss retailer’s supply chain transformation

CSCMP EDGE keynote address to feature retailer’s chief supply chain and logistics officer.

Arthur Valdez Jr. is the chief supply and logistics officer for Target.

Over the past four years, Target has transformed itself from a chain of brick-and-mortar stores with a side e-commerce business into a fully integrated omnichannel retailer that successfully uses stores as local fulfillment hubs. The retail giant’s chief supply and logistics officer will discuss how the company was able to accomplish this feat at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) EDGE Live virtual conference.

Arthur Valdez Jr. will kick off the second day of this completely online conference on September 21 with his keynote address, “Rebuilding a Supply Chain Through Authenticity, Engagement, and Problem Solving.” He will talk about how Target made massive changes to its supply chain, particularly in how it managed its inventory and transportation. Attendees will learn about pain points and success stories, as well as key leadership lessons in change management, talent development, and diversity and inclusion. Valdez will also discuss the significant investments that Target made in automation.

Valdez oversees all functions of Target’s global supply chain and logistics network, including inventory management, purchase orders, replenishment, fulfillment, global transportation, logistics, and distribution. He joined Target in March 2016, bringing more than 20 years of leadership experience in the retail supply chain and warehousing industry. Valdez has spent his career building supply chain networks around the world. His prior roles include senior leadership positions at Amazon and Walmart.

Suppliers report spare capacity for fourth straight month

Factory demand weakened across global economies in October, resulting in one of the highest levels of spare capacity at suppliers in over a year, according to a report from the New Jersey-based procurement and supply chain solutions provider GEP.

That result came from the company’s “GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index,” an indicator tracking demand conditions, shortages, transportation costs, inventories, and backlogs based on a monthly survey of 27,000 businesses. The October index number was -0.39, which was up only slightly from its level of -0.43 in September.

Small e-com firms struggle to find enough investment cash

Even as the e-commerce sector overall continues expanding toward a forecasted 41% of all retail sales by 2027, many small to medium e-commerce companies are struggling to find the investment funding they need to increase sales, according to a sector survey from online capital platform Stenn.

Global geopolitical instability and increasing inflation are causing e-commerce firms to face a liquidity crisis, which means companies may not be able to access the funds they need to grow, Stenn’s survey of 500 senior e-commerce leaders found. The research was conducted by Opinion Matters between August 29 and September 5.
