Blume Global Offers New Street Turns Solution for Ocean & Motor Carriers and IMCs

Blume Street Turn provides unequaled optimization capabilities driven by cutting-edge machine learning algorithms, offering a hands-off and fully automated solution.

Blume Global Offers New Street Turns Solution for Ocean & Motor Carriers and IMCs

Blume Global, a leading provider of logistics and supply chain solutions empowered by the largest globally-connected network, today announced Blume Street Turns, a solution to optimize drayage operations and container utilization through the use of cutting-edge machine learning algorithms. Research from the Boston Consulting Group in 2018 found that street turns — where truck drivers match outbound moves from rail ramps with inbound moves to rail ramps, rather than repositioning empty containers for pickup — for domestic intermodal carriers could save 8 to 18.8 million miles per year depending on container constraints. Blume research concluded there are similar savings when moving from and to seaports by matching import moves with export moves.

Blume Street Turns significantly improves driver and truck utilization and increases turns while reducing congestion and CO2 emissions around ports and rail ramps. Blume Street Turns matches incoming imports with outgoing exports around marine terminals and outbound with inbound moves around rail ramps. The company’s rich ecosystem of ocean freight forwarders, ocean carriers, dray carriers and intermodal marketing companies (IMCs) provides an extremely large volume of outbound and inbound moves significantly increasing the opportunity for street turns.

In addition to matching outbound with inbound moves for dray carriers, Blume supports using the same domestic or ISO marine container for the outbound and inbound moves. For example, a dray carrier can match an outbound move of a 53’ domestic container from a rail ramp in Chicago to a distribution center in Indianapolis with an inbound move from Fort Wayne back to Chicago. The dray carrier will request approval from the IMC. Once approved, the dray carrier will execute the move saving time and gas costs while reducing CO2 emission and congestion around the rail ramp. The exact same scenario applies for import and export operations around marine terminals where dray carriers request approval from steamship lines.

Street Turns is available immediately as part of Blume’s Asset Optimization suite which also includes:

- Intelligent Container Selection: forecasts demand and supply of containers at origin and destination locations enabling IMC’s and domestic container owners to select between private container, pooled domestic container or pooled ISO/marine container for each move.

- Domestic Reload: enables steamship lines to reduce or eliminate the cost of returning containers from inland ports, via rail, by allowing IMCs and other domestic shippers to use the ISO/marine container for a domestic move.

“Traditionally, street turns are manual and difficult to coordinate, but with Blume Global, customers can enact a higher level of automation allowing for full optimization of the user’s network,” said Pervinder Johar, CEO, Blume Global. “The Blume Street Turn solution provides a competitive advantage by allowing customers to leverage decades of market leadership in international and domestic multi-modal logistics, as well as an established network of the largest ocean carriers, over 300 IMCs and thousands of drayage companies with our digital operating platform.”

New Horizon Releases Innovative Functionality for Optimizing Inbound Logistics Scheduling at DCs

ACTON, Massachusetts – September 3, 2024 – New Horizon Soft, LLC, a global leader in AI-powered supply chain planning software, announced today the release of a new version of its Buyers Workbench procurement planning software. The latest version includes the ability to optimally schedule inbound deliveries, taking into account distribution center (DC) receiving capacity, thus minimizing receiving bottlenecks and lowering inbound logistics costs. A research paper describing the innovative methodology and its deployment at an iconic $10B+ U.S. quick-service restaurant chain was recently published in the peer-reviewed academic journal, the International Journal of Operations Research and Information Systems.

Supply chain organizations typically plan purchase orders without regard to DC receiving capacity. This leads to bottlenecks on some days and underutilized staff on others. New Horizon’s methodology, called Master Purchasing Receipt Scheduling (MPRS), uses a novel algorithm to automatically and optimally schedule deliveries. The algorithm plans deliveries at the time of purchase order creation and results in a steady volume of deliveries and lower planning and logistics costs. While first deployed at a restaurant chain, the methodology is applicable to any manufacturer, wholesaler, retailer, or foodservice company operating high-velocity DCs.

Princeton TMX Adds Barge Capabilities to Multi-modal TMS

August 28, 2024 (Fort Wayne, IN) – Princeton TMX, a leading multi-modal transportation management system (TMS) provider, today announced a strategic partnership with OpenTug, a marine logistics platform dedicated to enhancing freight efficiency on inland and coastal waterways by streamlining booking, quoting and tracking. Integrating OpenTug’s marine logistics capabilities into the Princeton TMX system lets shippers easily book and manage terminal, barge and vessel capacity within the platform.

Princeton TMX’s multi-modal TMS automates complex transactions by simplifying the entire transportation planning and execution process, providing shippers with better rates, better lanes and lower risk. Seamless integration with OpenTug’s digital tool, BargeOS, allows shippers to compare quotes, book capacity and track shipments for barge shipments the same way as over-the-road, rail and intermodal transport. This not only streamlines the transportation management processes but unlocks additional opportunities for operational and financial improvement by enabling shippers to manage their entire transportation operations in a single system.
