CSCMP Awards season kicks off

All awards will be presented at the 2021 EDGE Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 19–22, 2021.

CSCMP Awards

Each year the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) acknowledges and honors a select group of individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions throughout the supply chain management industry. It’s a way for the association to highlight the significant achievements of distinguished supply chain professionals, emerging leaders, innovators, and individuals/organizations dedicated to pursuing positive social, environmental, and economic initiatives.

If you would like to submit a nomination, it’s not too late. Here’s a sampling of awards with open nomination periods:

Distinguished Service Award: CSCMP's Distinguished Service Award (DSA) is the industry's most prestigious honor, bestowed upon an individual for significant achievements in the logistics and supply chain management industry. Presented annually, the award was instituted in 1965 as a tribute to logistics pioneer John Drury Sheahan. Nominations will be accepted through March 15, 2021.

Any individual who has made significant contributions to the fields of logistics and supply chain management is eligible to receive the Distinguished Service Award. All CSCMP members can submit a nomination for this award. Nominees will be judged on five criteria:

  • Sustained and distinguished record of contribution to the disciplines of logistics and supply chain management,
  • Contributions above the normal expectations of the job,
  • Recognition as an international leader in logistics or supply chain management,
  • Recognition as an innovator in logistics or supply chain management, and
  • Involvement in educating logistics and supply chain management professionals (both orally and written).

Nomination guidelines and a list of past winners can be found on CSCMP's website. To submit a nomination, please visit https://cscmp.formstack.com/forms/2021_distinguished_service_award_nomination_form.

Supply Chain Innovation Award: CSCMP’s Supply Chain Innovation Award (SCIA) recognizes teams that have demonstrated excellence, innovation, and return on investment for a solution to a significant supply chain challenge. CSCMP is accepting submissions through March 17, 2021.

To participate in this competition, your team needs to submit a case study on your innovation. If selected as a finalist, your supply chain innovation will serve to educate and provide valuable insights, lessons, and applicable takeaways via a dedicated presentation at EDGE 2021. Supply Chain Sustainability Award: CSCMP’s Sustainable Supply Chain Committee honors supply chain leaders who drive positive social, environmental, and economic impact. The organization is accepting nominations from February into March 2021.

To be eligible, award recipients must be CSCMP members. Categories include:

  • Supply Chain Team or Individual—recognizes the creation of an innovative idea, development, or program related to supply chain sustainability by a team or individual. (If the nominee is a team, the team must include a third party/external partner and have no more than five team members in total.)
  • Academic/Researcher—recognizes a significant contribution to the body of knowledge and/or educational resources supporting sustainable supply chains by a researcher or academic.

A team or individual may self-nominate or be nominated by a third party. Those nominating another individual should ensure the nominee is aware they are being nominated. No more than three teams or individuals will be named a finalist in each category. These finalists will be presented to the CSCMP Board of Directors, which will vote on the winners.

Last year’s award was presented to Ron Jarvis, Home Depot’s chief sustainability officer and vice president of environmental innovation. To submit a nomination, visit cscmp.org.

All awards will be presented during the 2021 EDGE Conference, which will be held on September 19–22, 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia. To register for the 2021 EDGE Conference, visit cscmpedge.org.

Just 29% of supply chain organizations are prepared to meet future readiness demands

Just 29% of supply chain organizations have the competitive characteristics they’ll need for future readiness, according to a Gartner survey released Tuesday. The survey focused on how organizations are preparing for future challenges and to keep their supply chains competitive.

Gartner surveyed 579 supply chain practitioners to determine the capabilities needed to manage the “future drivers of influence” on supply chains, which include artificial intelligence (AI) achievement and the ability to navigate new trade policies. According to the survey, the five competitive characteristics are: agility, resilience, regionalization, integrated ecosystems, and integrated enterprise strategy.

Optoro: 69% of shoppers admit to “wardrobing” fraud

With returns now a routine part of the shopping journey, technology provider Optoro says a recent survey has identified four trends influencing shopper preferences and retailer priorities.

First, 54% of retailers are looking for ways to increase their financial recovery from returns. That’s because the cost to return a purchase averages 27% of the purchase price, which erases as much as 50% of the sales margin. But consumers have their own interests in mind: 76% of shoppers admit they’ve embellished or exaggerated the return reason to avoid a fee, a 39% increase from 2023 to 204.

EY lists five ways to fortify omnichannel retail

In the fallout from the pandemic, the term “omnichannel” seems both out of date and yet more vital than ever, according to a study from consulting firm EY.

That clash has come as retailers have been hustling to adjust to pandemic swings like a renewed focus on e-commerce, then swiftly reimagining store experiences as foot traffic returned. But even as the dust settles from those changes, retailers are now facing renewed questions about how best to define their omnichannel strategy in a world where customers have increasing power and information.

BCG: tariffs would accelerate change in global trade flows

Geopolitical rivalries, alliances, and aspirations are rewiring the global economy—and the imposition of new tariffs on foreign imports by the U.S. will accelerate that process, according to an analysis by Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

Without a broad increase in tariffs, world trade in goods will keep growing at an average of 2.9% annually for the next eight years, the firm forecasts in its report, “Great Powers, Geopolitics, and the Future of Trade.” But the routes goods travel will change markedly as North America reduces its dependence on China and China builds up its links with the Global South, which is cementing its power in the global trade map.
