ProMat DX2021: What to consider when redesigning your DC for e-commerce fulfillment

Companies need to gather critical data about their operations to determine whether a manual, semi-automated, or fully automated distribution center would be best for them.

As e-commerce grows, many companies are finding that they need to redesign their distribution centers to more efficiently and effectively handle larger numbers of orders with a small number of line items. But what is the best design solution for these types of operations? Manual? Semi-automated? Or the installation of a fully automated system?

During an educational session at the ProMat DX2021 digital trade show, representatives from the material handling systems integrator Kuecker Logistics Group walked attendees through a case study that presented the high-level considerations that should be factored into making such a decision.


“Data is the foundation of any [DC] design decision,” said Daryl Bush, director of supply chain services.

Some of the data that is needed to make this decision include (but are not limited to):

  • Size of the products
  • Number of e-commerce orders per week
  • Number of e-commerce orders per week during peak season
  • Total lines shipped per week during peak season
  • Number of stock-keeping units (SKUs)
  • Number of items stored in inventory
  • Number of shifts

Throughout their careers, these four supply chain executive have demonstrated strategic thinking, innovative problem solving, and effective leadership as well as a commitment to giving back to the profession.

After a cyberattack, quick reaction is critical, Estes says

A quick reaction in the first 24 hours is critical for keeping your business running after a cyberattack, according to Estes Express Lines, the less than truckload (LTL) carrier whose computer systems were struck by hackers in October, 2023.
