The road ahead

Now is the time to invest in yourself and shape the future of supply chain management.

I often quote one of the finest leadership gurus, John Maxwell, who said, “If you want to know what’s on the road ahead, ask someone on the way back.” How true … until COVID-19, that is! Nobody has gone through this before.

We, as supply chain professionals, are at our best when we have disciplined, finely tuned business processes operating within a well-understood business environment. Sudden change and catastrophic impact to supply chains create … well… you know … 2020 and 2021. Will the road ahead be significantly different in 2022?

Well, even though the calendar says that it’s a new year, 2022 has begun with many of the same challenges that concluded 2021. But we have certainly learned from the past couple of years, responding by adding well-planned redundancies, increasing our focus on resiliency, implementing expansive digitization and warning signal detection, and strengthening critical and strategic partnerships. Taking what we have learned and turning that into an opportunity to reinvent and innovate is what supply chain professionals do.

Indeed, smart leaders and smart operational talent realize that continuous learning is paramount to success. Let 2022 be the year of developing talent through encouraging continuous education. Ports see import rush as dockworker strike looms

Container imports at U.S. ports are seeing another busy month as retailers and manufacturers hustle to get their orders into the country ahead of a potential labor strike that could stop operations at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports as soon as October 1.

Less than two weeks from now, the existing contract between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance covering East and Gulf Coast ports is set to expire. With negotiations hung up on issues like wages and automation, the ILA has threatened to put its 85,000 members on strike if a new contract is not reached by then, prompting business groups like the National Retail Federation (NRF) to call for both sides to reach an agreement.

MRO experts call for greater focus on business risks

A new survey finds a disconnect in organizations’ approach to maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO), as specialists call for greater focus than executives are providing, according to a report from Verusen, a provider of inventory optimization software.

Nearly three-quarters (71%) of the 250 procurement and operations leaders surveyed think MRO procurement/operations should be treated as a strategic initiative for continuous improvement and a potential innovation source. However, just over half (58%) of respondents note that MRO procurement/operations are treated as strategic organizational initiatives.
