Complete the 2023 CSCMP 3PL study

CSCMP is looking for supply chain professionals’ insights on various third-party logistics-related topics. Results will be released at EDGE Conference in September.

The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and Penske Logistics are looking for supply chain professionals to participate in their 2023 Third-Party Logistics (3PL) Study.

Now in its 27th year, the annual study investigates ways that shippers and 3PLs can collaborate to drive value in the supply chain. It also addresses the growth and development of the 3PL industry, what services 3PLs offer, and which services shippers use. Over the years, the study has taken a close look at the value that shippers attribute to their 3PL relationships. Additionally, the report does deep dives into important trends in the industry. For example, last year the survey took a close look at sustainability, the intelligent supply chain, cold chain, and the effects of COVID-19.

This year’s study topics include reverse logistics, talent management, back-to-basics, and contemporary issues. The survey is live at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CSCMP3PL2023 and will close on Wednesday, June 29.

In addition to the survey, the study draws from multiple streams of research conducted by the study’s team of academics and analysts. This team is led by C. John Langley Jr. from Penn State University, who helped start the study 27 years ago. The research team also conducts several in-depth workshops and interviews with leading executives.

The objective of the study is to look at the 3PL industry from both a user’s (or shipper’s) perspective and from a provider’s perspective. Researchers also talk to nonusers who do not currently use services from a 3PL. Last year, 51% of respondents were users, 43% were providers, and 6% were nonusers.

Your insights are welcomed, and your answers will be confidential. A complimentary copy will be available after it is released at the CSCMP EDGE 2022 Supply Chain Conference in September. The results will also be presented during one of the conference’s educational sessions. All prior studies can be accessed at no cost at www.3PLStudy.com.

Logistics services continue to “go green”

The market for environmentally friendly logistics services is expected to grow by nearly 8% between now and 2033, reaching a value of $2.8 billion, according to research from Custom Market Insights (CMI), released earlier this year.

The “green logistics services market” encompasses environmentally sustainable logistics practices aimed at reducing carbon emissions, minimizing waste, and improving energy efficiency throughout the supply chain, according to CMI. The market involves the use of eco-friendly transportation methods—such as electric and hybrid vehicles—as well as renewable energy-powered warehouses, and advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) for optimizing logistics operations.

Real-time data flows can provide competitive advantage

Companies that integrate real-time data flows into their operations consistently outperform their competitors, said Peter Weill, the chairman of MIT’s Center for Information Systems Research (CISR), in a session Wednesday at a conference held by IFS, the Swedish enterprise resource planning (ERP) and artificial intelligence (AI) firm.

These "real-time businesses," according to Weill, use trusted, real-time data to enable people and systems to make real-time decisions. By adopting that strategy, these companies gain three major capabilities:

Supply chain networks prep for delays as Milton storms in

Hurricane Milton was just beginning to unleash its slashing wind and pouring rain on Florida’s western coast on Wednesday, but the supply chain disruptions caused by the enormous storm have already been unfolding for days.

For example, millions of residents and workers in the Tampa region have now left their homes and jobs, heeding increasingly dire evacuation warnings from state officials. They’re fleeing the estimated 10 to 20 feet of storm surge that is forecast to swamp the area, due to Hurricane Milton’s status as the strongest hurricane in the Gulf since Rita in 2005, the fifth-strongest Atlantic hurricane based on pressure, and the sixth-strongest Atlantic hurricane based on its peak winds, according to market data provider Industrial Info Resources.
