CSCMP presents 2022 awards for excellence

A recap at the annual awards given during the EDGE Conference in September.

Every year at its annual conference, CSCMP honors individuals and organizations that are helping to push the supply chain discipline to new heights. The following are some of the recognitions given out this year.

  • 2022 Distinguished Service Award was presented to Masao Nishi, principal at consultancy M. Nishi Strategic Advisory.
  • Nishi and Beth Ford, chief executive officer and former executive vice president, chief supply chain and operations officer, of Land O’ Lakes, were inducted into CSCMP’s Supply Chain Hall of Fame.
  • Andrii Aleksyeyev, supply chain director of Milkalliance, received the 2022 Emerging Leader Award for outstanding supply chain professionals age 32 and under. He helped establish the industry association's roundtable in Ukraine.
  • Mexpress, which provides transportation services between the United States and Mexico that bypass border clearance at the Mexican border, was presented with the 2022 Gail Rutkowski Transportation Excellence Award.
  • Lina Wang of Pennsylvania State University, won the Doctoral Dissertation Award for her paper “Platform Design and Operations in the Last-Mile of the Supply Chain.”
  • Bernard J. La Londe Best Paper Award was given to Stefan Kurpjuweit, Christoph G. Schmidt, Maximilian Klöckner, and Stephan M. Wagner, all from ETH Zurich, for their paper “Blockchain in Additive Manufacturing and its Impact on Supply Chains.”
  • (pictured above) John Bell of University of Tennessee, David Dobrzykowski of University of Arkansas, Trang (Jenny) Hoang of University of Nebraska–Omaha, Nicolo Masorgo of University of Arkansas, and Morgan Swink of Texas Christian University received the E. Grosvenor Plowman Award for their research paper, “Time is Ticking: The Role of DC Operations and Transportation in Avoiding Late Orders in Online Retailing.”

The venture-backed fleet telematics technology provider Platform Science will acquire a suite of “global transportation telematics business units” from supply chain technology provider Trimble Inc., the firms said Sunday.

Trimble's other core transportation business units — Enterprise, Maps, Vusion and Transporeon — are not included in the proposed transaction and will remain part of Trimble's Transportation & Logistics segment, with a continued focus on priority growth areas following completion of the proposed transaction.

U.S. shoppers embrace second-hand shopping

Nearly one-third of American consumers have increased their secondhand purchases in the past year, revealing a jump in “recommerce” according to a buyer survey from ShipStation, a provider of web-based shipping and order fulfillment solutions.

The number comes from a survey of 500 U.S. consumers showing that nearly one in four (23%) Americans lack confidence in making purchases over $200 in the next six months. Due to economic uncertainty, savvy shoppers are looking for ways to save money without sacrificing quality or style, the research found.

Geodis kicks off peak season hiring boom with 3,700 seasonal jobs

The winter peak season hiring boom has begun, as logistics service provider (LSP) Geodis said Thursday that it plans to hire 3,700 seasonal workers across its warehouses and distribution centers in the U.S. and Canada to help manage the expected rise in volumes.

That hiring surge marks a significant jump in relation to the company’s nearly 17,000 current employees across North America, adding 21% more workers.

NRF: U.S. is on the cusp of nailing a “soft landing” in inflation fight

With the economy slowing but still growing, and inflation down as the Federal Reserve prepares to lower interest rates, the United States appears to have dodged a recession, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF).

“The U.S. economy is clearly not in a recession nor is it likely to head into a recession in the home stretch of 2024,” NRF Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz said in a release. “Instead, it appears that the economy is on the cusp of nailing a long-awaited soft landing with a simultaneous cooling of growth and inflation.”
