Embracing robotics and automation for a smarter future

To gain the full benefit of cutting-edge technologies, companies must embrace ongoing education and training.

In the ever-evolving landscape of supply chain management, the integration of cutting-edge technologies has become paramount for staying competitive and efficient. One such transformative force that continues to reshape the industry is robotics and automation. As we stand at the intersection of innovation and logistics, this edition of Supply Chain Xchange dives into the impact these technologies are having on the supply chain ecosystem.

Automation has long been associated with improved efficiency. From warehouse operations to order fulfillment, the deployment of robotics is streamlining processes, reducing human error, and enhancing overall productivity. Now it’s become robotic solutions, ranging from autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) to robotic arms, that are revolutionizing warehouse management. Automated guided vehicles navigate through facilities with precision, optimizing inventory placement and minimizing the time required for order picking. Robotic arms handle tasks like sorting, packing, and even intricate manipulations, significantly reducing processing times.

Meanwhile, analytics powered by artificial intelligence can process vast datasets to predict demand patterns, enabling supply chain professionals to make informed decisions. This foresight minimizes the risk of stockouts or excess inventory, optimizing the supply chain for economic efficiency.

To realize the benefits of robotics and automation, however, companies must address challenges such as implementation costs, integration complexities, and workforce adaptation. CSCMP members tell us that investing in training programs and fostering a culture of technological readiness are crucial steps toward overcoming these hurdles, and yet, challenges still exist long after initial implementation.

Training programs that focus on operations, maintenance, and getting the most out of these new technologies can help employees adapt to the changing landscape and contribute to a more efficient supply chain. Perhaps the most important factor in the people-and-machine environment is an ongoing and intentional collaboration between supply chain professionals, technology experts, and vendors.

By fostering collaboration, investing in training, and overcoming implementation challenges, supply chain leaders can harness the transformative power of robotics and automation. The journey toward a smarter, more efficient future begins with a commitment to embrace change and leverage technology to propel the supply chain industry into new realms of success.

Our commitment to providing the latest in innovative supply chain education and content is the very reason we’ve produced this and all future editions of Supply Chain Xchange. CSCMP’s mission is to connect, educate, and develop you throughout your career.

Suppliers report spare capacity for fourth straight month

Factory demand weakened across global economies in October, resulting in one of the highest levels of spare capacity at suppliers in over a year, according to a report from the New Jersey-based procurement and supply chain solutions provider GEP.

That result came from the company’s “GEP Global Supply Chain Volatility Index,” an indicator tracking demand conditions, shortages, transportation costs, inventories, and backlogs based on a monthly survey of 27,000 businesses. The October index number was -0.39, which was up only slightly from its level of -0.43 in September.

Small e-com firms struggle to find enough investment cash

Even as the e-commerce sector overall continues expanding toward a forecasted 41% of all retail sales by 2027, many small to medium e-commerce companies are struggling to find the investment funding they need to increase sales, according to a sector survey from online capital platform Stenn.

Global geopolitical instability and increasing inflation are causing e-commerce firms to face a liquidity crisis, which means companies may not be able to access the funds they need to grow, Stenn’s survey of 500 senior e-commerce leaders found. The research was conducted by Opinion Matters between August 29 and September 5.
